Phoenix Square is a £21.5m mixed-use development in Leicester's Cultural Quarter. This new Digital Media Centre provides three cinema screens, digital exhibition space, a public cafe, office space for up to 68 new businesses and 63 high quality city-living apartments on the upper floors.

The multi-functional nature of the development provided several acoustic challenges. These included controlling the transmission of sound between the office areas and studios and the residential units above, as well as within and around the cinema auditoria. Within the studios, Rockfon's Sonar dB44 was installed as it provides Class A sound absorption and outstanding sound insulation. Rockfon's Polar colour ceiling tiles were specified for the cinemas and projection room, utilising the Polar Black colour option, to provide a smooth surface finish and high sound absorption.

In the corridors, all ceilings had to line up while remaining easily movable. To meet this requirement, Rockfon created a specially designed Koral 1200 x 300mm tegular tile, which was then fitted into Rockfon's grid system to ensure the tiles were in line. The micro-textured, painted white surface of Koral provided the high levels of sound absorption required and allowed creation of an individual ceiling expression.
