This historic building on Pall Mall, London had been all but destroyed internally by its previous Banking tenants. Nevertheless, when the adjacent 5-star Sofitel Hotel set out to create the best Spa in London this Grade-II listed, landmark property proved irresistible.
Works included removing old banking vaults and basements to provide the environment for three floors of Hamam treatment rooms, solaria, massage facilities, chromatherapy rooms, steam rooms, a 'Zen Refreshment Bar' and a retail area in a contemporary style within a totally restored Historic Building environment.
Specialist stonework, lighting, glazing, water features and plasterwork were installed throughout. Behind the scenes luxurious 'rain-sky' showers, deep-relaxation rooms, a Kohler Sok infinity bath, a private relaxation pool and changing facilities were constructed within a three-story 400m
2 facility.
Specialist finishes included gold leaf, plastered ceilings, fusion glazing, marble walls, Corinthian columns and in excess of £1m of bespoke joinery (awarded an additional 2010 AIS Gold Medal).
Sophisticated M&E systems (including sound and light equipment) were installed throughout the space within the restricted voids and Listed Building constraints to provide a first class environment and deal with the demanding water and air treatment requirements of the spa rooms themselves.
The entire project was constructed whilst the Hotel remained fully operational (and occupied!) at all times.
