Within this mixed use development situated behind St Paul's Cathedral, a new major retail mall has been created on three floors housing up to 60 retail outlets and restaurants.
The project concept design is by French architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel while detail design and delivery of the project was the responsibility of Sidell Gibson Architects.
The innovative architectural design for the ceiling and cladding finishes called for a mixture of profiles, materials and colours to create the exclusive ambience of the interior space.
Clark and Fenn began to develop and understand the technical and practical processes of the materials specified. The package included facetted polished plasterwork multi coloured ceilings, GRG profiles, stainless steel mirror and brushed finish ceiling panels as well as the development of an expanded metal mesh ceiling grid system used in the open malls as hinged access units and elsewhere as traditional suspended ceilings. All of these finishes required innovative lightweight metal and Unistrut grid support systems to ensure line and level as well as mechanical links with adjacent materials.
There was from the outset much integration and coordination required between wall and column finishes throughout the mall areas and Clark & Fenn Skanska was therefore required to also design, produce and install both polished and brushed steel profiles to the columns and bulkheads around the malls. Acoustic insulation cladding to a number of structural soffits was also called for together with integrated fire and smoke barriers within the mall ceilings.
