Satisfying the demands of Pascall + Watson Architects and BAA at Londons Heathrow T5 was no mean feat.

The design called for a floating ceiling, eye-catching enough to detract from the services and impressive enough to dominate the space. In response to the challenge, Lindner designed and installed 5,000 ceiling discs made from 2mm lightweight aluminium, each with a diameter of 1,800mm. These solutions satisfied the client's aesthetic and functional requirements and have since become and iconic image of the baggage reclaim, arrivals and departures areas.

Throughout the rest of the airport, to satisfy the requirement for full and frequent access, Lindner installed 35,000m2 of their Drop and Slide ceiling panels. Offering easy access to the ceiling void, each panel can be dropped and slid horizontally in each direction, reducing the need for the tiles to be removed, thereby avoiding potential damage to the tiles and reducing the life cycle cost.

As well as ceilings and bulkheads to the concourses, back of house areas, toilets, escape corridors and rail box Lindner also met the demanding challenge of the ITTS area with a highly engineered raft ceiling with curved ends, providing superb aesthetics while at the same time allowing clear enunciation from the public address system.
